The George Keith Award for cycling in most Counties

Objective

The George Keith award is made annually to the member of the Wessex who has cycled in the most counties in a year. Distances or duration are not taken into account. Because the   George Keith at John O'Groats
award is not dependent upon speed or strength, it should be possible for any cyclist to win it. The award encourages cycle touring throughout the UK, with record keeping. The award is made at the Wessex AGM. The winner keeps the award for a year and has his/her name engraved upon it at club expense.

The Award

The award was specially commissioned from John McPhail of Selkirk Road, Moffat in Scotland DG10 9LF in 1998. He based the design upon the newsletter covers of the time.

Judging

The Wessex secretary is responsible for the award being made. Entries are to reach the Wessex secretary by September 30th so that judging can take place for award at the Wessex AGM. Late entries are at the discretion of the Wessex secretary. Any other matters of dispute or difficulty will be at the discretion of the Wessex secretary. The Wessex secretary can enlist whatever help he/she sees fit in determining the winner.

The Cycle Year

The cycle year for award is from October 1st to September 30th the following year, one full year.

Counties

The Counties of England, Scotland and Wales and Northern Ireland all count. The Counties might change from year to year. For example Avon has come and gone. Rutland went and has now returned. If you are not sure whether an area counts as a county, for example Swindon Unitary Authority, put it down. George had problems like this and used his old maps to keep to the “old” counties and their boundaries.

Entry

The usual process is for candidates to give, send, e-mail a list of which counties they have ridden in in the past year to the Wessex secretary; not forgetting to include their own name and address. In the first instance, supporting evidence is not required but inclusion of approximate dates and mileages would be useful.
